Designed by the famous architect and designer Warren Platner, Suffield’s Kent Memorial Library is at risk for demolition.
This does not have to be the case however, there are alternative solutions to keep the library intact that can satisfy all parties involved.
"It is important for all of us to try and understand how the decisions we make today will effect the future of our towns. As we see things through the architectural historical rear view mirror it is easy to embrace the history and nostalgia of our distant past. This may include the old mill or industrial brick building at the heart of the city or the abandoned rail station, or the red barn nestled within the landscape. Sometimes it is difficult to see the importance of architectural gems of our recent past. The Kent Library with its simple massing and the use of materials is a wonderful example of modernist architecture. It is clearly a legible piece from its time within the building landscape of Suffield. The way the building embraces the terrain and steps down the rolling site. The use of natural daylight and glazing in the courtyard and the framed views to the natural landscape are all wonderful qualities that will allow this building to be revitalized and respectfully expanded to meet the growing needs of the Suffield Community. I'm confident that the preservation of this building is the right decision today and the future as an important iconic piece Suffield's past."
